Friends: Edith Poirier

I can't believe I haven't done a post on Edith sooner. Edith Poirier is one of my best friends here, I met her at my first day at NABA, and we have been friends ever since. Edith is a painter in heart and soul and the amount of hours that she spends painting in her studio  is unbelievable. Borrowing from the cities she travels to (she always carries a sketch book with her), street art ,publicity images, the burlesque and the circus, she creates painted collages of the city as spectacle. 

Some works also plays around with the concepts of the art history, the way we view art within the art system.

The above mural was painted in the neigbhourhood Isola outside the Garibaldi station  in Milan for the event "In su i Praa" with Isola art centre in May 2012. Her works really works well within urban spaces, and I hope that she can do more street art soon. 

Edith will be participating in the Isola art centre show "Fight-specific Isola" which will be happening all over Milan. Some of Edith's work will be on view at the Isola Libri bookshop, via Pollaiuolo 5, Milan. Read more about Edith on her website or she also has a group on Facebook.

Friends:Stefano Serusi

With Stefano one can wander the city for hours exploring corners, churches and windows like you have not ever seen it before.  His work to me reveal something of this explorer. His works; romantic and somewhat nostalgic seems like little discovered treasures and souvenirs of  a timeless journey.  In his interview with with Arianna Beretta, he shares a poetic thought:  "Everybody  needs to be someone else for 15 minutes a  day". 

His exhibition "Trame Parallele" with Agnese Guido at Underdogstudio in Modena  will open on 17 March and run until 7 April. It is curated by  Andrea Lacarpia.

Friends: Carlo Spiga

On Friday 4 February  I took a walk with Carlo Spiga while he was doing his performance Biaxi which was part of the Holiday Island exhibition  held in Berlin. The performance consisted of him walking through the streets of Berlin dressed like a ceremonial bull of  Sardinia, pulling a little cart with a speaker that plays traditional Sardinian music. Every now and then it is interrupted by making an announcement in German about the exhibition.  Biaxi is an old Sardinian word that basically means "to travel with baggage/ with a load". What I loved was how this action of just walking with the music through the city became naturally inter-weaved with the noise and hustle of the city and its people.   Read more about Carlo's work on his blog. Friends: Wei-Ning Yang

Wei-Ning is a Taiwanese girl who has been living in Milan the past two years, she is currently doing the Visual arts and curatorial program at NABA with me and part of my group of friends that I call family here. Apart from having admirable style and knowing where to find shoes for cheap, she is also a very talented artist who experiments with video, print and illustration. I am hoping to show some more of her work, but here is some postcards that she made based on one of her videos. As friends she gave each a few as gifts.  These scans do not seem to capture how wonderful they are.
